Foundation's global release is November 15 with Magic Online and MTG Arena's release falling a few days before. Like with most releases these days, Foundations cards become legal from Prerelease weekend onwards which is something that began with Streets of New Capenna.

What is MTG Foundations?

Foundations is designed to be a stable, Standard-legal set that will remain in rotation until at least 2029. It introduces a curated set of cards that touch on the basic elements of Magic gameplay. This makes it ideal for newer players to learn and build decks while offering seasoned players important staples for competitive formats. The set was first revealed at MagicCon: Amsterdam and has already generated excitement due to its focus on core Magic gameplay, especially after Wizards of the Coast highlighted its potential to shape the game’s future.

Key Features:

  • Standard-Legal: Foundations will remain in Standard for an extended period, providing players with a familiar base set.
  • New and Classic Cards: While it introduces new cards, Foundations also brings back older staples, giving it the feel of a core set.
  • Beginner and Competitive Products: With Beginner Boxes and Starter Collections, Foundations includes pre-constructed decks, tutorials, and over 350 cards in the larger Starter Collection. This setup makes it easy for new players to dive into the game while providing plenty of options for deck building.

Foundations Products:

As with most recent MTG sets we will receive the usual Play and Collector Booster Boxes, Bundles, and Jumpstart Booster Boxes to help kick things off.

Additionally there are a few new products that will be introduced with Foundations.

First there is the Starter Collection, which contains the following:

  • 350+ MTG Cards
  • 22 traditional foil cards
  • 3 Foundations Play Booster Packs
  • 95 Basic Lands, where 10 of these are Full Art Basic Lands
  • 14 Tokens
  • A Click wheel
  • A "How to Build a Magic Deck" Booklet

If you're looking to get into Standard this is a great starting point. Containing a solid 350 cards and a few Play Boosters, the Starter Collection means you can build a number of decks for you and your friends. These are all Standard legal, meaning you can hit the LGS and play in Standard events using only cards from the Starter Collection.

Next we have the Beginner Box. This product contains the following:

  • 10 Jumpstart Boosters (These Jumpstart Boosters are predetermined and designed for beginner play.)
  • 2 Reference Cards
  • 1 Reference Guide
  • 2 "How to Play" Booklets
  • 2 Gameboard Playmats
  • 2 Spindown life counters

This box is aimed at players who are brand new to Magic. The experience is curated in a way that you can play and learn the game in an easier manner. This is a great way to learn the mechanics of MTG and a great starting off point for casual game nights until you're ready to upgrade and get more competitive.

If you're looking to pick up Magic or want a fresh start with staple cards, MTG Foundations will be a key release to watch!
